Closet Organizer Components

Storing your clothing can be a snap once you have a useful closet organizer system that's customized to meet your needs. This glossary may be helpful to those of you who are new to closet organization or confused by some of the terminology.

Bi-Fold Doors
Bi-fold Doors are two or four doors hung on a track, and are typically found in closets and pantries. The doors "fold out" in a V-formation as they slide along the track.

Bypass Doors
Bypass Doors slide past each other, leaving the center of the closet somewhat difficult to access. If you have bypass doors, avoid positioning storage drawers and boxes in the center of your design. A section of long hang in the center is preferable.

Pocket Doors
Pocket Doors slide into built-in "pockets" in the walls. They come in pairs, with one door panel sliding to the right and the other sliding to the left.

Single Hang (also called Long Hang)
Long Hang is one shelf and rod hanging vertically. Use Long Hang for dresses, coats and longer clothing. In general, 25 percent of your closet space should be dedicated to Long Hang.

Double Hang (also called Short Hang)
Short Hang can be used in any closet to maximize space. Short Hang includes two shelves and rods hanging in a row vertically. Short Hang is ideal for shirts, folded pants, and suits. Typically, 50 percent of your closet should be Short Hang.

Triple Hang
Triple Hang is typically used in a child's closet and includes three shelves and chrome rods hanging in a row vertically. Triple Hang maximizes space for small-sized clothing and is generally not recommended in a closet for an adult.

Headers
The wall space above the door frame.

Return Walls
The shorter walls on either side of the door.

Reach-In Closet
A Reach-In closet is generally 24 inches deep, accommodates one row of shelving, and has sliding or bi-fold doors. To design a Reach-In closet solution, measure the width, depth, height, height of header, and width of return walls.

Walk-In Closet
A Walk-in Closet has enough depth to allow you to "walk inside." A variety of door styles are used. Walk-in Closets give you more design freedom.

Hardware
Brackets

Brackets lock securely into the uprights and support shelves and accessories. Shelving brackets come in two types: ventilated shelving brackets for use with ventilated shelving and solid shelving brackets for use with wood shelving.

Chrome Rods and Rod Stops
Chrome Rods simply snap into Rod Clips to offer a continuous-slide hanging rod anywhere within a closet. Rod Stops provide a convenient and secure "stop" at each end of the Rod.

Hanging Rail
A primary support component. Once mounted to the wall, all other components simply snap into place.

Hanging Upright
Uprights hang vertically along the hanging rail. Brackets easily insert into the uprights to support shelves and accessories.

Organization Boxes
Organization Boxes add more functionality to any space. Position organization boxes side-by-side or stack them vertically within any configuration. These boxes are available in various styles and colors.

Rod Clips
These support chrome rods. Patented open-slide design allows hangers to glide uninterrupted from end to end. Simply insert rod clips into the opening on the underside of ventilated shelf brackets, then snap into place.

Ventilated Shelving
Ventilated Shelving is usually constructed of heavy-gauge steel and coated with a finish that won't crack, chip, or peel. These shelves allow your clothes to breathe and are built with maximum strength in various colors and lengths.

Wood Shelving
Wood Shelves are attractive and durable and are available in a variety of colors and lengths.

Connective Hardware
Shelf Locators
Secures the shelf to the bracket. Two Locators are used with each bracket. No tools are required, and there is no permanent damage to the shelf. The tape can be removed to adjust the shelf.

Shelf Screws
A short and long screw are offered in this package to attach a shelf to a bracket permanently. The short screw is inserted into the front of the bracket, and the long screw into the rear of the bracket. Both screws are then drilled into the shelf.

Universal Anchors and Screws
Used to firmly secure the hanging rail to the wall. The heavy-duty, patented anchor spirals into the drywall surface, providing maximum strength without having to attach to or mount into studs. Package also includes peel-and-press cover stickers to cover and conceal metal screws.

Ventilated Shelf End Caps
End caps finish off the ends of any ventilated shelf that has been cut to a specific size.

Wall Mount Uprights
May be used to create a stack of shelves. Not recommended for closets, where the hanging rail would be much easier to install and level. Wall mount uprights are mounted into studs.
